Abstract

Education has been around for as long as man has been, through its structure and perception has varied over centuries and civilizations. Now we are living in the highly scientific and technological world. Enormous changes are occurring in day to day life of human beings because of globalization, privatization and liberalization. Education is seen as central to economic competitiveness, the reduction of poverty and inequality, and environmental sustainability. So, it is necessary to provide education for all and it is feasible by using resources with high quality especially human resources. Teacher’s quality is the keyword for insuring the quality of education. Qualified competent teachers will not be able to carry out their task professionally without the conditions that support their tasks. The present paper discusses the challenges of teacher education in the age of globalization. It also provides an overview of globalization and teacher education and changing context of teacher education in the global scenario.

Introduction

In the present age of science and technology it is universally acknowledged that education plays an important role in the development of a nation. Education is an effective mean of social reconstitution and it also nurtures values and culture of a nation. The Education Commission (1964-66) stated that:-

“In a world based on science and technology it is education that determines the level of prosperity, welfare and security of the people.”

Education plays a pivotal role in human resource development. The process of liberalization and globalization has created enormous opportunities and challenges in the era of global competitiveness. In the era of these fast emerging changes on global level, knowledge and skills have emerged as key factors in the quest for sustainable human development. In India’s interest, the educators have the great responsibility to prepare the citizens equipped with qualities and competencies in global perspective. Quality is the only currency which is accepted universally and it has great importance in the case of education. To improve the education system, we should pay attention to quality teacher education for the improvement of teaching and learning in the classroom to meet global challenges.

Globalization

According to Cheng, globalization is the transfer, adaptation and development of values, knowledge technology and behavioral norms across countries and societies in different parts of the world. The phenomenon of globalization include global networking global transfer and interflow of information in educational, technological, social, political, economic and cultural areas, international collaboration for different projects, integration and exchange of different cultures and use of international standards.

The globalization of education includes the relevance of education to global development and pooling up the best, intellectual resources from different countries and parts of the world for a quality learning teaching and research.

Teacher Education

Teacher education refers to the policies and procedures designed to equip prospective teachers with the knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and skills they require to perform their tasks effectively in the classroom, school and wider community. It is a programme that is related to the development of teacher proficiency and competence that would enable and empower the teacher to meet the requirements of the profession and face the challenges therein. It is well known that the quality and extent of learner achievement are determined primarily by teacher competence, sensitivity and teacher motivation. No nation develops beyond the quality of its education system, which is highly dependent on the quality of its teachers. Teachers should be given the most appropriate tools during and after their training, including content knowledge and skills as well as teaching methodology to be able to do their work professionally.

The globalization concept, if taken into account, would require that teachers and teaching should be recognized like all other professions and should require stringent training and acquisition of knowledge and skills and professional registration under a global council of unified teacher registration body to allow for easy mobility of teachers across national boundaries.

Challenges of Teacher Education in Globalization

Research in Teacher Education: Enhanced scope of Teacher education requires researches and studies to visualize scope of teacher education in the context of globalization. Research must respond to the area of policy issues, curriculum issues, evaluation systems, classroom practices, training strategies, value inculcation, school community relationship, technology mediated education, quality in education, interactive education, Inclusive education, practice teaching school etc.

Competency based Curriculum: The competency based curriculum represents an approach to instructions, which emphasize the application of the knowledge in a manner, which may be observe or measured. Competency based curriculum guides focus on a comprehensive view of each course of study, which is delineated into its essential components listing of most important objectives to be mastered and competencies which every student should be able to demonstrate often instruction is completed. Competency based lesson, which change the students in activities designed to apply learning with an increased emphasis on higher order thinking skills. Students are evaluated not only on knowledge, but also primarily on their ability to perform tasks associated with knowledge acquired.

Adaptability and Professionalism

The standard of education will improve if all the teachers have global perspective, well prepared and provided with ongoing professional development and appropriate support. Teachers need to be adapted to the socio-economic and cultural diversities of the students in order to complete in the international sphere.

Quality Education

Today we are now more interested in the quality in teacher education. High quality teacher education is one more challenge which is successes caters to the following conditions without any bias such as staff pattern as prescribed by NCTE, Infrastructure catering to the needs of teaching learning situations, effective technique assessment and effective learning outcome assessment.

The need to favor the development of skills long side knowledge: The phenomenon of globalization as helped to widen the gap between those who globalized and those who are globalized of the process at the local, national, regional and International levels. Teaching to live together is synonymous with developing an understanding and appreciation of interdependence in sprit of respect for the value of pluralism, mutual understanding and peace.

Use of Integrated Technology

A growing challenge in education is, establishing and implementing strategies to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for the teacher to essentially use technology as instruction tool. The extent to which teacher is prepared to infuse technology into curriculum and instruction is major contextual factor.

Impact of globalization on Teacher Education

In the knowledge economy, the objectives of a society changes from fulfilling the basic needs of all round development to empowerment. The education system instead of going by text-book teaching will be promoted by reactive, interactive self learning, both formal and informal, with focus on values, merit and quality. The workers instead of being skilled or semi-skilled will be knowledgeable, self-empowered and flexibly skilled. Finally, the economy will be knowledge driven and not industry driven.

All fields of human activity, including education, have been influenced by the process of globalization clubbed with unexpected advancements in information and communication technology. Within the various sectors of education, teacher education has been affected the most. It is now increasingly realized that knowledge is universal and its creation and dissemination cannot be confined with national boundaries. The world is now like a global village, and continuous international interaction has become an essential component of human survival. The globalization of economy has led to internationalization of higher education including teacher education, not merely for economic benefits, but also for increased social interaction and promotion of international understanding.

Positive impact of Globalization on Teacher Education

  • A number of teacher education institutions were increased.
  • Usage of technology increased in the educational institutions.
  • Information and communication technology were increased.
  • Teacher educational institutions were established in rural areas.
  • Government and private partnership in the field of teacher education.
  • Extension of Internet facilities even to rural areas educational institutions.
  • Teachers are less worried for government jobs as MNC’s and private or public sector are offering more lucrative jobs.
  • Free education for bright students.

Negative Impact of Globalization on Teacher Education

  • Indian youths leaving education in mid-way and joining MNC’S.
  • There has been an increase in the violence, particularly against women in the education institutions.
  • Quality in education is decreasing (liberalization).
  • Degradation of values.
  • More availability of cheap and filthy material (CD’s or DVD’s of Hollywood movies, porn movies, sex toys, foreign channels like MTV) in the name of liberalization. It affects the psychology of teachers. Some teachers are miss-behaving with students.
  • Values of teacher are decreasing.

Conclusion

It is left to one’s discretion to use a knife either to cut a fruit or to kill a person. In the globalised world, it is necessary to be very cautious. Every single step should be taken with utmost care. It is the first duty of policy makers, politicians, officials and leaders to give priority for well being of society. Globalization, undoubtedly, offers great opportunities for growth and development. However, no one can deny that its benefits are unevenly shared and its costs are unevenly spread among, across and within countries. This is particularly true with respect to developing and underdeveloped countries. Inspite of economic reforms, the rates of unemployment and poverty in India are still high. Both in concept and practice-globalization has positive, innovative, dynamic aspects, and simultaneously it also has negative, disruptive and marginalizing aspects. No county can live in isolation without seeking impact of global trends and a change in all fields of life. Education is the most important tool in national development and this age of knowledge has great impact on education. Teacher education is the brain of all educational disciplines as it delivers education to train the prospective teachers. It is also the mother of all professions. Like all other professions, globalization is also affecting teacher education.

Abstract

Aims and values in education are set according to the ever-changing needs of the society vis-a-vis the nation. Education and teacher attempt to meet them. The family, school and society have important role in the individual build up and setting the life patterns of which the value is one of the major components. The teacher role in value inculcation is immense and superb as he/she is the guardian of organizing classroom teaching learning environment The variegated role of trio has to be reflected in the homogeneous and conjoint efforts so as the children could be ensured valuable living. The paper discusses as how to assign the new roles to these social institutions for developing all dimensions of values in the learners for there integrated as well as differentiated growth. The curriculums have to be reformulated, society has to be made responsible and the teachers have to be led their role to play safe with the values inculcation. However the schools and the teachers are over loaded. A part of responsibility has to be born by the society for promoting the useful values in their wards so that the load of school and education could be reduced genuinely.

ABSTRACT

The study aims to study teacher effectiveness in relation to their gender and locale of 600 government school teachers from 70 government schools of three districts namely Jalandhar, Bathinda and Muktsar of Punjab. Teacher effectiveness scale by Umme Kulsum was used. The results of the study found that more than half (53.3%) school teachers were highly effective. Female school teachers were more effective (t= 5.63, P<0.01) than male school teachers. Teacher effectiveness of urban school teachers was more (t=3.52, P<0.01) as compared to rural school teachers.
